Five Simple Breakfasts to Eat on the Run

 by: Constance Weygandt

Studies have shown that people who eat breakfast gain less weight, are more alert and have healthier hearts. After not eating, for eight to ten hours overnight, our bodies need to be refueled. Breakfast jump starts our metabolism. People who skip breakfast often
end up in a mid-morning slump and consume more calories throughout the day.

Living such a busy lifestyle presents a nutritional challenge. Most often, unless we awaken at the crack of dawn, we are usually running out the door, running children out the door, or both. While intellectually we may realize the importance of eating breakfast, sometimes it is that one more thing we just can?t get to.

I have discovered a short cut solution that allows me to eat breakfast while on the run. The following are five of my favorite portable breakfasts:

3.
A hard boiled egg, a glass of milk, and a banana.

2.
A bran muffin, (make a batch and freeze them ),a glass of milk and fruit.

3.
A peanut butter and honey sandwich on whole wheat bread and fruit.

4.
A fruit smoothie made with milk and protein powder.

5.
A cheese sandwich on rye with lettuce and tomato. (Yes, a cheese sandwich)

Experiment with your favorite foods and create your own breakfast on the run. Be sure to include a fruit or vegetable, a good source of fiber and a protein. Include your fruit with your breakfast or have it as your midmorning snack.
Make breakfast a habit. In doing so, not only are you helping your body but teaching your family good eating habits, as well.

Strawberry Jamming Finale

Strawberry Jamming Finale

 by: Kit Heathcock

So the strawberries are finally slowing down, the end of the season is in sight? and do I feel relief that I will no longer be chained to the kitchen counter, three nights a week, preparing strawberries for jam? Am I sick of the sight of them, turning into one myself, in a word, jaded?
Surprisingly enough I?m not. Six weeks of making jam and I could carry on longer.

I sneak into the larder to count the jars?have I sold too many? Will it be enough for the family for the year and what about Christmas presents? Two weeks ago I was merrily flogging it at the market, secure in the knowledge I could make more.
Now friends are ringing up asking to buy jam and I?m grudgingly parting with it but the Scrooge hoarding instinct is kicking in, a sure sign of the end of the season.

And I never did master the thick jam versus runny jam dilemma, the jam decided for itself what it would become,...

Growing Apples for Great Wine

Growing Apples for Great Wine

 by: Brian Cook

There are countless varieties of apples in general cultivation in this country and all have their likes and dislikes - yet all the all-round varieties seem to do well almost anywhere.

Like all fruits they like to be treated well and will reward those who remember this. I am concerned with growing apples and other fruits such as plums for wine-making; therefore there seems little point in covering the growing of these fruits in the espalier fashion or as cordons. Apart from the fact that the average home-grower will not want this type of tree, he will want as much fruit as he can get from as little space as he can allow. No one will dispute the quality of fruits grown as cordons, but they are expensive to start with and cannot hope to compete with the bush tree when a lot of fruit is the aim of the grower.

The bush tree is the most suitable for the small garden where the owner wants as much...

Fruit For Fitness Tips

Fruit For Fitness Tips

 by: Steve Shannon

Without question, fruit has wonderful natural benefits for the human body. Fruit is packed with vitamins and fiber much like vegetables, but comes in a wide variety of sweeter, more palatable flavors.

Adding fruit to your diet is an excellent thing to do, but there are a few things that you need to keep in mind:

1. Eat fresh fruit instead of drinking fruit juice. Juice is often sweetened, but fresh fruits have natural sugars. Also, you don?t receive all of the needed fiber and vitamins from fruit juice as you do from fresh fruit.

2. If you do have a craving for fruit juice, then go for fresh fruit juice instead of those that contain artificial flavors and colors. Or even better, try making your own fruit juice, taking care not to sweeten it with too many calories.

3. Choose fresh fruit over processed fruits. Again, processed and canned fruits do not have as much fiber or vitamins as...
